Telling Someone’s Words Later
📘 Level 3 — Reported Speech

Direct speech gives the exact words: Maria said, “I am tired.”

Reported speech tells the words later, in your own voice. The words were said in the past. So the verb steps back one tense.

“I finished the report.”
Reported: She said she had finished the report.
(Past Simple steps back to Past Perfect.)
Direct speech (exact words)Reported speech (your report)
“I am tired.”She said she was tired.
“I work here.”He said he worked there.
“I have lost my keys.”She said she had lost her keys.
Said in the past → report it one tense further back.
Past Perfect (lesson 47) shows the earlier action. Reported speech uses it for the same reason.
One Step Back for Each Tense

Use this chart when the reporting verb is in the past (said, told).

Direct speechReported speech
Present Simple
“I work here.”
Past Simple
She said she worked there.
Present Continuous
“I am working.”
Past Continuous
She said she was working.
Past Simple
“I worked there.”
Past Perfect
She said she had worked there.
Present Perfect
“I have worked there.”
Past Perfect
She said she had worked there.
Present Perfect Continuous
“I have been working.”
Past Perfect Continuous
She said she had been working.
Past Perfect
“I had worked there.”
Past Perfect (stays the same)
She said she had worked there.

Past Perfect cannot go further back. So it stays the same. You know had been + verb-ing from lessons 51 to 53.

If the reporting verb is in the present (says, tells), nothing steps back. There is no gap in time.

  • “I am tired.” → Maria says she is tired.
  • “I work here.” → Tom says he works here.
  • “I have finished.” → Ben says he has finished.
  • “We are leaving.” → They say they are leaving.
  • “I need help.” → She says she needs help.
Pronouns, Time Words, and Place Words

Reported speech uses your point of view. So other words change, not only the verb.

Direct speechReported speech
Pronouns: I, we, myhe / she, they, his / her
now, todaythen, that day
yesterday, last weekthe day before, the week before
tomorrowthe next day
two days agotwo days before
herethere

Look at five examples. Each one changes the pronoun, the time word, or the place word.

  • “I called you yesterday.” → He said he had called me the day before.
  • “I am busy today.” → She said she was busy that day.
  • “We live here.” → They said they lived there.
  • “I saw it two days ago.” → He said he had seen it two days before.
  • “My car broke last week.” → She said her car had broken the week before.
Told Needs a Person

Two verbs are very common: said and told.

said + no person: She said she was tired.
told + a person: She told me she was tired.
  • He said he was busy.
  • He told me he was busy.
  • They said they had left.
  • They told us they had left.
  • The teacher told the class she was late.

You can drop the word that. She said that she was tired and She said she was tired are the same.

Watch Out For These
❌ Mistake 1 — No step back
✗ She said she finishes the report.
✗ He told me they miss the bus.
✓ She said she had finished the report.
✓ He told me they had missed the bus.
The reporting verb is in the past. Step the verb back one tense.
❌ Mistake 2 — Said me / told without a person
✗ She said me she was tired.
✗ He told he was busy.
✓ She said she was tired.
✓ He told me he was busy.
Said has no person after it. Told always needs one.
❌ Mistake 3 — Old time words
✗ He said he had called me yesterday.
✗ She said she was busy today.
✓ He said he had called me the day before.
✓ She said she was busy that day.
The time words belong to the day of speaking. Change them in your report.
❌ Mistake 4 — Wrong pronoun
✗ “I am tired.” → She said I was tired.
✗ “We live here.” → They said we lived there.
✓ “I am tired.” → She said she was tired.
✓ “We live here.” → They said they lived there.
Use your point of view. Change I to he or she. Change we to they.
