A Wish About the Past
📘 Level 3 — Past Perfect — Lesson 3

The past is finished. You cannot change it. But you can wish it had been different.

This is a regret. Use wish and the Past Perfect.

I wish I had studied harder.
(I didn’t study hard. Now I feel bad.)
A wish about the past → wish + Past Perfect.
The wish is the opposite of what really happened.

Look at five more sentences:

  • I wish I had called her.
  • She wishes she had stayed home.
  • We wish we hadn’t sold the car.
  • He wishes he hadn’t forgotten his keys.
  • They wish they had left earlier.
What Happened and What You Wish

A wish says the opposite of what happened. Find what really happened first. Then say the opposite.

What really happenedThe wish
I didn’t study.I wish I had studied.
She didn’t take the job.She wishes she had taken the job.
They didn’t leave early. They wish they had left early.
I forgot her birthday.I wish I hadn’t forgotten her birthday.
We sold the house. We wish we hadn’t sold the house.
He said something unkind. He wishes he hadn’t said it.

Use this simple test:

You didn’t do it → wish you had done it.
You did it → wish you hadn’t done it.
Statements, Negatives, and Questions

If only means the same as I wish. It is stronger. It shows a bigger regret.

I wish I had called her.
If only I had called her!
  • If only we had left earlier!
  • If only she hadn’t said that!
  • If only he had asked me!

The verb wish stays in the Present Simple. Add -es for he, she, and it. Only the second verb goes back.

I wish I had called. · She wishes she had called.

For a negative, use hadn’t + the past participle.

  • I wish I hadn’t spent so much money.
  • She wishes she hadn’t quit her job.

For a question, use Do or Does with wish.

  • Do you wish you had studied more?
  • Does he wish he hadn’t moved?
  • What do you wish you had done differently?
Two Kinds of Wishes

You can also wish about now. Then use the Past Simple after wish.

A wish moves one step back from reality. Now moves back to the Past Simple. The past moves back to the Past Perfect.

About now
(wish + Past Simple)
About the finished past
(wish + Past Perfect)
I wish I had a car. (I don’t have one.)I wish I had bought a car. (I didn’t buy one.)

Now → Past Simple: now · today · these days Finished → Past Perfect: yesterday · last year · when I was young · ago
Watch Out For These
❌ Mistake 1 — Past Simple for a finished past regret
✗ I wish I studied harder last year.
✗ If only she called me yesterday.
✓ I wish I had studied harder last year.
✓ If only she had called me yesterday.
“Last year” and “yesterday” are finished. Use the Past Perfect. The Past Simple makes it a wish about now.
❌ Mistake 2 — “would have” after wish
✗ I wish I would have called her.
✗ She wishes she would have stayed home.
✓ I wish I had called her.
✓ She wishes she had stayed home.
After wish and if only, use had + the past participle. Do not use would have.
❌ Mistake 3 — The wrong direction
✗ I didn’t call her. I wish I hadn’t called her.
✗ I sold my car. I wish I had sold my car.
✓ I didn’t call her. I wish I had called her.
✓ I sold my car. I wish I hadn’t sold my car.
A wish is the opposite of what happened. You didn’t do it → had. You did it → hadn’t.
